The tenderloin is just West of the Hotel and I would avoid that area as there is nothing to see there anyway, [except for a great restaurant/bar 'Farmer Browns' close to the hotel] and as is the case in SF panhandlers are out in force around the West side of Union Square but only want spare change and will not hassle you if you pass them by from a distance.
