2. When we asked staff (rude) about the booking we were told that what we book is 'a request and not guaranteed' - so they can basically stick you in any room they like regardless of what you book and PAY for.

8. I know NYC hotels aren't cheap but despite paying about $180 per night for a tiny, grimy, dated room it was very galling to be greeted by a rude woman on reception telling us 'we are enjoying the cheap rates now but this won't last after the refurbishment'.
