We checked out the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel to the south, and it did not even come CLOSE to comparing with the Fairmont Orchid -- it was virtually empty, had devastatingly ugly bright white 1970's architecture, it's pool was tiny, it's beach was not groomed well, and it had an eerie, empty, 'the shining' feel to it, with NONE of the warmth or gorgeous landscaping of the Fairmont Orchid.

8. I was kinda hoping that we would have gotten upgraded, but I guess we didn't rank high enough :) We did have a teensy tiny view of the ocean from our patio, but you kinda had to stand on your tiptoes and squint to see it.

9. If you want shade you have to go way past the lagoon and claim a small area or pay $55 for a tiny 'cabana' recliner.
