1. The lobby, restaurants, and bars were stately and ornate, and the staff couldn't have been more courteous.

2. All of the staff were extremely polite and friendly - they were not gushing and all over you which some might class as being 'snooty', I think people respond to you how you respond to them and I was always courteous to the staff and I found them helpful, chatty and polite in return.

5. We asked for an upgrade on reception (told to do so by friends; normally wouldn't have the nerve) and the man on reception, who was pleasant and courteous, upgraded our room to a lovely one, large by NY standards, and gave us some complimentary drinks vouchers to celebrate a birthday.
