1. You don't need a taxi or metro to go to the empire state building, top of the rock or central park.

4. We were literally 2 mins walking distance from Toys R Us in Time Square, 3 mins from Bryant Park, 2 mins from various subway stops, 5 mins to 30 rock, 10 mins to Empire State building and maybe a $10 cab ride uptown to the museums/Central Park and $10 to head downtown for the clubs/lounges.

There is so much to do in NYC Ellis Island, statue of liberty, top of the rock, empire statue to mention a few we actually purchased the 7 day new york pass and it was worth every penny, you get a great information book telling you where to go how to get there and basic information as to what there is to see.

We would also recommend doing the Top of the rock observation deck at sunset as the light is fantastic, the Gray Line open top tour buses for really thorough tours of downtown and uptown, Staten Island ferry (its free and has great views of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty) and the Visitor Centre at the World Trade Centre (a remarkable and moving tribute).
