1. which threw us slightly as we didnt realise that was happening and was quite scary, alot of people and all the roads closed etc .

2. Yes, it does border the Tenderloin area which is fine during the day, but perhaps a little scary at night, but I would just advise people to head towards Union square and Nob hill if you are going out for dinner.
