3. The Wellington Hotel, although an older hotel with small rooms, provided us with very good service from the concierge giving us valuable tips to the doorman getting us a taxi on theater night, to the prompt room service.

This is a great place to base yourself - subway stop outside the door on several of the main lines, mid-town location near Carnegie Hall, coffee shop in lobby provides room service for breakfast and lunch at reasonable (for New York) prices - hotel bar is really in the Molyvos restaurant which can be entered from the lobby.
