We checked out the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel to the south, and it did not even come CLOSE to comparing with the Fairmont Orchid -- it was virtually empty, had devastatingly ugly bright white 1970's architecture, it's pool was tiny, it's beach was not groomed well, and it had an eerie, empty, 'the shining' feel to it, with NONE of the warmth or gorgeous landscaping of the Fairmont Orchid.

7. We saw a number of humpback whales, heard the whales singing while we were diving (a once in a life time experience), saw manta and eagle rays, sea turtles and went through the amazing underwater landscape of coral reefs and lava tubes.
