When asked for walking instructions to the shops on Union
Street
(not Union Square), he suggested a great route along Polk where we were able to avoid marching up and down hills, and able to stop into a number of great shops along the way.

The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is pretty safe with a lot of young people out on the
street
--although walking too far to the south or west means a less welcoming area.

We parked our car directly across the
street
and had no problems although the Serrano has valet parking for the same price as the parking garage.

The room was nicely furnished, the bathroom small, but clean, no noise from the

The car rental companies right across the
street
were super convenient and so much less expensive than an airport rental.

it is true that the hotel is on the edge of union square and the tenderloin (just like the hilton, across the
street
and the Clift), with that in mind, I never had a problem walking around a night.
