2. There was a small shelf above the sink and toilet which is probably adequate for a male guest, but a female guest might have trouble finding enough room on it to accommodate all her toiletries and what-not.

I read some on line reviews about the rooms/bathrooms being very small but because we were sharing a room and got 2 double beds we found the room more than adequate for our needs- Yes, they are on the small side- like in europe- but since we hardly spent any time in the room it was not a problem.
