1. In New York I am a kind of downtown girl, so I was quite curious when on a work trip I was booked at The Lucerne, on the Upper West Side.

2. Its convenience for the subway and cabs downtown mean the Lucerne is a viable option even if your work (or play) doesn't mean you absolutely must be on the UWS.

Close to the subway (1, goes Downtown and Uptown - if you want to go East there are buses, or of course you can walk); close to Central Park and to the Hudson River (great for morning and evening walks/jogs, if you are into that sort of thing); close to wonderful food shops like Zabar and Barney Greengrass (which is a good thing because the restaurant attached to the hotel serves food that reads and sadly tastes like airplane dinners - chicken fillets in a port sauce with cranberries and baby potatoes and dwarf carrots and and and) .

5. We found 79th Street, to be great, the subway was a 2 minute walk, for uptown or downtown trains using 1 Line.
