8. There are some bonuses, however: the hotel is affordable, and although the decor is a little aged and gloomy, coming in from the street is like stepping into a cool, pleasant oasis.

9. There was no air conditioning (as there is not in most non-chain European hotels), but San Francisco nights are cool, and during the day you should be out and about exploring the city.
