1. When I complained to the staff I was told 'this is our central ventilation system, you wouldn't hear the rotor'.

This did two things: (1) got us away from the train noise that everyone had complained about if you stay in the other tower that faces the train tracks with all the incessant dinging of the crossing rails and the blowing of the train horns, and (2) got a great view of the harbor in a serviceable (but dated) room, with a balcony.
