The front desk clerk was equally
apologetic
(they did mention changing our room the night before, but found the hotel sold out for the event, which we didn't doubt), and they gave us a generous discount on the room, as compensation.

but didn't really go out of their way to make it up to us.

To their credit, the front desk staff was
apologetic
and sent me an apology in the form of food from room service, however the room(s) should not have been in that condition to begin with, especially for the price.
