2. DO - go to Alcatraz (just brilliant, made by the audio tour; book ahead); buy a transit ticket ($27 for 7 days' use of buses, cable cars, metro, street cars); go up Coit tower for great views; take some warm clothes (pretty chilly in the fog, even in August)DON'T - eat at Fisherman's Wharf (in our experience it's poor value for money - walk a few blocks to get much better food for less - try cafe Maria which is great); spend much time in Fisherman's Wharf (unless you just love full-on tourism); bother with a car - use public transport (see above) - good vfm from buses etc (and the hills are SO scary to drive); expect to see Monk (invisible in our stay).

3. We ended up hiring a car for a day just so we could drive around a little and we had tickets to go to a football game and didnt want to get public transport out there , it was cheap and would highley recommend it , although driving up those hills where kinda scary lol The holiday inn hotels dont pretend to be anything there not , its a basic hotel with basic rates and facilities.

4. The area in which the hotel is located is not the nicest neighbor and a little scary at night.
