1. You are far away enough from the 'touristy' areas to get a good feel of the neighborhoods, but not so far that you can't reasonably get to anywhere you may want to go in DC or Maryland (I forgot to mention it's right near the Metro which goes all over DC and to Maryland).

M Street is a bit more commercial (Subway just across the street and a McDonalds one block down to the left) but you are in a residential neighborhood basically towards Dupont Circle and it appears to be a safe location -- I don't think there were any unsafe areas that we felt along M or New Hampshire streets to/from subway or restaurants.
