1. The maid cleaned the room that day and we came home late to find a whole bag of shopping completely gone.

The empty room had to have belonged to someone who had not shown the night before, or someone checked out at 6:30 the next morning and the maid went up and cleaned it before 6:30 (unlikely) and before they even knew I was coming down, OR the lady at the desk the night before did not want to mess with it.
