1. This upgrade cost $70 and while the extra space and treats were nice, on our next visit I would take a pass.

5. Maybe I am just aware of these sorts of details, and I realize the hotel is old, but how costly would it be to buy those things that make the door stop towards the end instead of a deafening thud every time.

Bring your own alcohol - not just to be cheap as the hotel bar is expensive but also because it is so busy that it is hard to get a drink - actually believe it or not room service drinks are probably the best deal considering the wait, crowds and cost - as long as you go ahead and order everything at once ($4 delivery charge + tip every time).
