1. (When walking it is a good idea to stay close to the street side of the sidewalk to avoid the doorways and alleys).

2. Note: the streets you do really want to avoid even at daytime are market, around van ness all the way to about two blocks from the union station mall, we saw people 'dealing' and smoking pipe in broad daylight.

5. Or you can walk down Bush and once you get down far enough, you can come back toward Geary and end up at Union Square (if you're concerned about avoiding Tenderloin, this is your best route).
