1. Beautiful tropical gardens, superb big pool, large comfortable rooms and great nightly entertainment (but on big name concert nights it gets very busy and they are expensive too).

2. Shelter Island is about a 15 minute drive from San Diego and parking is pretty expensive in the main areas (head for the Horton plaza and validate) but we were happier to stay there than in the Gaslamp district.
