1. Don't get me wrong, this is manhattan is not an unsafe (or more unsafe) area of town.

2. We came back to the hotel a few nights about 9pm and there was still many tourists wondering the street so didnt feel at all unsafe walking at night.

3. That might be, and yes, I can see how one might feel intimidated when walking back along the hotel's road at night, however, I felt that if travel agents were recommending it, they wouldn't be doing so if it was unsafe.

4. We never felt threatened or unsafe, no matter what time of day or night we walked down the street.

5. The location was overall very good - as others have commented previously it is not the smartest road in town but it did not feel unsafe, even at night, and was very convenient for Times Square, Macy's, Penn station, the subway, all within 10 minutes walk, and the Empire State Building about 15 minutes on foot.
"Excellent value for money, good location, clean and friendly " Read full review on TripAdvisor   9/17/2010 Vote
6. It's not on a swanky street, but we never felt unsafe - the neighborhood looked to be part of the now-defunct garment district.
"Great NYC Hotel " Read full review on TripAdvisor   9/12/2010 Vote
7. Unfortunately it is not down the nicest street in the world but I wouldn't characterize it as unsafe but I could see how a family from some quiet midwestern town might be taken aback if they've never visited NYC before.
"Super comfy bed - very quiet room - a few minutes walk from Penn Station " Read full review on TripAdvisor   1/26/2010 Vote
8. As stated before, street is not full of activity, supermarket at the corner but no pubs/cafes to talk about, but never did i feel unsafe even when it got fairly late.

9. The one downside is the location (gritty street but not unsafe) but then again everything is nearby .
