2. While the room rates were higher this time, we noticed some nice upgrades like newer and more comfortable balcony and pool furniture and an expanded breakfast area.

Not only did the concierge upgrade us to a suite, he spent a good ten minutes explaining the best way to see the sights in San Diego, how to get there, etc. The hotel was perfectly located right on Pacific Beach and the room itself was lovely -- big and nicely furnished, with a balcony right above the pool from which you could see the ocean.
