1. I recommend jumping in the car for a bite at Bayside Marketplace downtown (good variety, a vibrant crowd, beautiful views, and even a nifty food court!).

2. Not the greatest neighborhood (pretty industrial area), but right next to the airport, so it's about 6 miles in one direction to Coconut Grove/Coral Gables, and about the same distance in the other direction to downtown Miami.

5. I had been comparing MANY hotels in the Miami downtown and airport areas, and I finally chose Embassy Suites because it boasted two room suites and most importantly - free shuttle service to and from the airport, all at a very affordable rate.

6. We used taxis quite a bit and one way to Bayside/Downtown area was $25.00 and about $30.
