I told the hotel
manager
about how well we were treated by the staff and later that night, we returned to find a bottle of wine and a nice note from him thanking us for letting him know how his staff was doing.

was decidedly non-sympathetic and non-empathetic (the desk clerk did the best she could under the circumstances).

I then called the hotel, talked to the

and was told that a group had overstayed their booking, so the hotel had canceled some incoming reservations.
