1. We took a walk around Banyan Drive and while the views and area parks are beautiful, most of the hotels in the area are quite run down.

If you are staying on the Hilo side of the island then I would highly recommend Hilo seaside for the following reasons:- clean room- excellent Hilo bay view (note: this is not true for all of their rooms)- great staff (upgraded us from a standard room to an ocean view room)- we requested for a microwave and a coffee maker for our room and got them in no time - free parking- the restaurant (coconut grill) beside the hotel is very convenient (open early, 7am; has an access from the hotel; excellent breakfast options; good view).
