1. I have stayed in just about every Marriott in the DC area and would say that if you are on business (or just want to see the central DC sites like the Capital and Smithsonian), you are better off at the Marriott Metro Center or the Renaissance downtown which are in walking distance.

6. If you are willing to walk a mile or so go north on connecticut ave for some trendy restaurants in Cleveland park or go east to Adams Morgan downtown for same.
