1. I would also recommend walking back through Central Park from Manhattan to the hotel, You can enter Central Park South from either the Times Warner mall (west side) or the Apple store (east side), and if you walk north (there are plenty of maps in the park if you fear you might get lost) you will experience all the lakes, squirrels, bridges and rock mounds that the park has to offer.

4. On the corner is a nice deli with nice folks, and if you walk up to the 100s and Broadway, you can find plenty of good restaurants and a cute dive bar called Tap of the Keg.

6. Local area seemed typical non-tourist New York, very mixed, plenty of local deli's and grocery shops, but a fair walk to any proper eating places, though Broadway around Columbia University is cheap and buzzy (about a mile away).
