1. Honua Kai is still my favorite place to stay on Maui, but I would recommend the Fairmont Kea Lani if you were looking for a luxurious place to spend a special occasion / vacation.

2. The ambience was luxurious but understated, so you could feel at ease in casual summerwear and not out of place in summer slippers ;) You can walk to the shops at Wailea (though a bit hot) and make use of the stretch of beaches via the path to the neighboring resorts.
