Bottom line, I found the Alexander to be better than the various Philly B&B's I've tried (quirky, grumpy proprietors) and of course not as
expensive
as the chain lodgings.

overall, i think its a good place to stay, even if the rooms are quite
expensive
- it seems to be the normal price in this city - at least in the center.

Not only was the Alexander Inn comporably priced, if not less
expensive

The term boutique hotel was always frightening to me as I understood the boutique part to translate into

The room itself was VERY small - smaller than we had anticipated - but we also got the least
expensive
room.

It should meet most of your desires if you are not looking for a large anonymous hotel with a swimming pool and an
expensive
mediocre restaurant.

The proprietors must fear that the guests will eat lunch at their
expens
