1. the complete lack of surly employees, the extremely accommodating photographers, characters, performers, etc.

This wasn't unique to us or our particular table - the layout of the tables (no staggering to ensure that each table can see), the lack of multiple tiers/steps to ensure that the diners at each table don't need to look through the three tables of diners on the same tier in front of them to see the stage, and the poor speaker setup guarantee that the back row diners won't have an enjoyable evening.

3. Our room was quite dark and lacked a central main light - making the hunt for our daughter's sandals this evening a challenge, as so much of the room is in shadow.

7. Some are refurbished with more attention to detail than others - I always wonder where they find the workers to do the painting and caulking, it seems to be the most obvious lack of talent or neglect of detail.

They put out a light breakfast and snacks, which avoids the need to wait on lines in the morning to eat, and it provides a retreat during the day when you need one or in the evening for parents who need to be in touch with the office as I did (though bring an ipad and blackberry / the hotel is mysteriously lacking wifi).
