While the accomodations were minmialist to the point of being spartan, the room was clean and comfortable enough, the coffee in the complimentary continental breakfast was excellent, and the staff at the front desk was warm, engaging, well-informed (in regards to the neighborhood, public transit, et cetera) and very friendly.

4. I'd never been in this neighborhood, and it was full of wonderful coffeshops, bookstores and retail.

The floors creaked, the windows had no screens, the wood (doorways and trim) was splintered and warped, no ac unit (there was a heat wave when we went and it was horribly hot), and parking cost an extra $12 per night (it was across the street and down two blocks through a seedy neighborhood past the bus stop and behind a chain-link fence).
