1. If you go some streets down in Soma, there are some cool and fairly cheap restaurants, maybe one of the only positive sides of the neighborhood.

4. I guess one of two things, you pay for 5 star location and 5 star hotel, and live in a bubble thinking that everyone is as lucky as you, or, be at the heart of it all in a decent neighborhood, paying decent prices for a comfortable bed.
