If you are on holiday I would recommend staying slightly further north, out of the central downtown district, as most of the tourist attractions are closer to the Lombard Street/Fisherman's Wharf area which is also has a nicer, more relaxed atmosphere and looks more like the hilly San Francisco most people think of.

9. It's also worth noting that San Francisco has quite a lot of homeless people who mostly hang around in the downtown areas, particularly in the evening, although we didn't see any trouble from anyone.
