9. I tell my ' knowledgable' Manhattan friends about this confident gem perfectly situated a long walk away from the village, a blink and broad step away from Penn Station, and they tilt their heads - incredulous that the name is foreign to them.

I think 3.5-stars is more accurate; it is a boutique hotel, with a hip lobby and bar restaurant, in a really excellent location in terms of transit and availability of interesting, affordable dining (Koreatown a block away, Curry Hill just a short walk south and a bit east, a super Cuban cafeteria a couple blocks north), and shopping (Lord and Taylor very close; the big Macy's just a few blocks further).
