So, I *would* recommend this to a friend who I knew had about the same tolerance for noise as I do and who would not really have high expectations for staying in a cushy place all day, but I would definitely *not* recommend it for someone like my parents or someone who may spend more time in their room, be more sensitive to noise, etc.

7. Another thing to remember is with hostels you get room-mates, ours were friendly and quiet but if you're going to book a bunk room then you have to consider this - and bring a padlock for your bag if you're worried.
