4. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for value over luxury, convenience over brand name, and a truly Hawiian experience over a generic resort atmosphere.

5. The general manager has been with the hotel for more than 20 years and seems to have a knack for attracting motivated staff who genuinely enjoy their jobs--not an easy task given all the flashy competition and the difficult economy.

6. You can smoke in your room but we chose to smoke on the generous lanai only.

8. I generally like firm mattresses, but this one did not give at all and resulted in some pretty significant hip pain for me off and on during our stay.

9. We noticed that bathroom mirrors and counters/sinks were very obviously not cleaned nor wiped down, despite having left generous tips to housekeeping.
