1. The intent was that God's beautiful setting on the perfect white sand beach needed no competition so the hotel was designed to avoid jumping out at you as so many do and therefore competing with the scenery.

If you are staying at the Mauna Kea, the best thing to do to avoid frustration of having to feel obligated and stuck to eat in the very expensive restaraunts at the hotel or anywhere on the Kohala Coast, here is what we did: We went right to the store on our first morning(there is a grocery store right in the town of Waimea) and we stocked up on some cereal, milk, fruit, drinks, bread, lunchmeats, cheese, condiments, etc.
