1. It is not that bad a walk to downtown or China Town, we did both, as well as catching the cable car from California & Hyde.

6. From Union Square, many of the hopper bus tours set off so watch out for the lines doing the downtown tour, the Golden Gate Park tour and the Golden Gate Bridge tour, all of which are well worth it.

8. If you are coming from the airport, don't confuse downtown shuttle services for 11 dollars with the hotel courtesy services for free but only for certain hotels (this may be something, which only happens to foreigners).
