Preferring the value end of the hotel spectrum, we have enjoyed internet specials from the Outrigger Keauhou (adjacent to the great snorkeling of Kahaluu Bay); the Royal Kona Resort (near downtown Kailua-Kona, formerly the Hilton before it moved to Waikoloa); and the semi-luxurious Hapuna Prince Hotel (on the best beach in Hawaii).

3. It has a terrific breakfast, 1.5 miles from downtown, stuff to borrow to play with on the beach, a great person behind the desk and a lot of returning guests.

4. A short drive away from the Kona downtown, you get a room for less than 100 bucks with truly awesome views, the sound of the surf, delicious breakfasts, and friendly guests.

5. We were somewhat sampling the islands, and had preceded our stay with a few days in Hilo at a secluded Bed and Breakfast, and followed Kona with 2 nights at a 4 star hotel in downtown Waikiki/Honolulu.
