5. There was a biker rally in Austin that weekend so plenty to see as we walked past 6th street and across the Congress bridge to the Hyatt, where we rented a canoe and paddled around the lake for an hour - which seemed short, I'd recommend at least two so you can see a bit more of the lakefront.

7. It's only a short cab ride to the bars on 6th street (the best reason to visit Austin).

8. The restaurants are adequate, if not great, and there's the adjoining shopping street of Guadalupe and the activities available on the 50,000 students campus, including such features as the LBJ Library, an archival center open to the public and a stylish art museum.

9. The only downfall is that it's quite a walk to 6th Street and South Congress so plan on catching a bus or cab if your trip entails these destinations.
