We did just want a cheap place to sleep while spending the day out doing stuff but cheap to me is clean even if basic and the Pickwick just seemed dated, musty, old beds, needed painting and replastering everywhere - this hotel hasn't seen any attention in a long time and obviously doesn't care to tend to it for future customers.
