I understand that staying in a downtown hotel there may be a fair bit of ambient
noise
, but no number of pillows over the head could mask this boom.

The worst thing was the layout of the room itself, with the head of the bed quite near the door (allowing hallway
noise
to trickle in all night long) and the TV placed at one side of the bed, as opposed to the classic foot of the bed location.
